How do you feel about a band that is more famous for a video where they dance on treadmills than for their music? Well, when it's in the service of marketing a group and fun tunes like this latest OK Go track, which also has a great video (with a live performance, no less), then we say, well, OK.

After years of Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera and the like, Lady Gaga is really a breath of fresh air--or maybe more like a hurricane. Whereas the aforementioned girls are sort of PG-13, Lady is definitely more like Rated R. And she can sing. And apparently she has other skills. Recently Polaroid hired her as a creative director for a special line of imaging products. No PR stunt there; it's a legit gig from what the Polaroid people told us. She definitely knows how to put on a show. So how difficult could it be working on some products with Polaroid--no offense!

Emily Wells is a revelation. If the music doesn't seem to be quite your style, give it a chance, wait until she starts singing. The other artists are easier to appreciate, if you will. All in all, some great music for your car.

These guys are NOT the greatest guitarists in the world, not even close. But they are great stylists of guitar sound. And Jimmy Page is not much of a technical player, but my god could he write some amazing guitar riffs! Definitely worth buying when available on DVD.

Tracey Thorn of Everything But the Girl may have the most distinctive, tonally most interesting voice in pop music the last twenty years or so. EBTG is pretty interesting as well.

New music from Norah Jones, plus some of my favorite Jones tracks, in particular the one with Wax Poetic (see and listen to the third video).

I was listening to local radio (in the Los Angeles area you still have some decent stations) and heard a music critic talk about Ingrid Fliter, Mason Bates and reference Terry Riley. Fliter is an amazing pianist, Bates a serious composer with a strong pop sensibility and Terry Riley's "In C" is an interesting composition that was recently remixed--listen to the original version here. Sorry, couldn't find the remix on Youtube. Anyway, some good music for auditioning your system or simply keeping you entertained while on the road. I highly recommend getting some of Ingrid Fliter's work.

It was the anniversary of Jeff Buckley's birthday this week. I used to think the music press was excessive in its praise for him, but his songs have aged well and his inimitable singing style, his tone, the sort of vaguely ethereal quality of his vocals set him apart. I also included a video from his father Tim Buckley. Those are followed by songs by Nick Drake--some of my favorite music--and then Rufus Wainwright, who in some limited way, reminds me of Jeff Buckley. This mix isn't exactly party music, but it will move you all the same.

There are plenty of innovative artistic accomplishments we can be proud of as Americans. At or near the top of the list are the various achievements in music. Just as America rose to power in the 20th century, our musicians, composers have dominated on the airwaves and in record stores. And jazz in particular is and will remain our supreme contribution to the world of music.

A French rock band, Phoenix, supplies the soundtrack for the car trailer of this All-American vehicle, the sexy new Cadillac SRX. Credit to GM's lead designer, John Manoogian, who, along with his team, has really revitalized the interior as well as exterior look and quality of the family of Cadillacs. One might say that Cadillac has gone a little Euro the last few years, making them much more competitive with BMW, MBZ and Audi. Which makes using a French rock band's music for its TV commercial apropos. N'est-ce pas?

Jimi Hendrix's guitar playing may have wowed audiences in the 60's but it's his song writing that will keep him on fans' playlists. It's the song that these artists are covering, not the guitar riffs. The greatest honor for a songwriter is having other great artists/musicians making their own version of your work. So instead of including the Hendrix version (go listen to the record), here are Stevie Ray Vaughan, Sting, Steve Vai (et al) and Eric Claption with Sheryl Crow (with sort of a countrified take on "Little Wing"), all of them paying tribute to a great guitarist and a truly amazing songwriter.

I was a little surprised that Lincoln was leveraging The Church's "Under the Milky Way" on the MKT advertisement. Having been a fan of The Church (and in particular Steven Kilbey's voice) around the time the song was popular, I was sort of disappointed to hear the song being used to sell, well, anything. But I also felt something akin to pride. Kind of the way I felt when I heard Nick Drake (!) on a Volkswagen commercial.

After a rock-solid early career that included their stellar debut album “Remedy” and its even better follow-up, “Rooty”, as well as their offshoot Atlantic Jaxx work, the Basement Jaxx have released some notably spotty work in the past few years.

I love the guitar work between Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo on this and so many other Sonic Youth tracks. One of the few bands that I can connect with musically even when the song, the composition, isn't all that engaging.

This live version of "Everlong" in Hyde Park is my favorite. Would've been cool if the band joined in a little earlier, but hey I'm not really complaining. "My Hero" also from the same concert starts with a great drum solo. I also included the music video which is entertaining.
