  • It Might Get Loud

These guys are NOT the greatest guitarists in the world, not even close. But they are great stylists of guitar sound. And Jimmy Page is not much of a technical player, but my god could he write some amazing guitar riffs! Definitely worth buying when available on DVD.

  • Before the Music Dies

If you've been following the music business at all you won't discover anything new here, but the anecdotes and perspectives from musicians such as questlove, branford marsalis, erykah badu, et al. make this an interesting documentary--plus the unheralded bands showcased within may be a revelation to those of you that haven't discovered new music acts due to the ultra commercial approach of traditional radio.
  • Ricky Gervais: Out of England

After three previous tours and DVDs in his native England, Gervais finally has brought his live show to the US late last year. The show was subsequently broadcast on HBO in advance of this DVD release.
  • Elton John "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road"

Great DVD with interviews with Elton John, Bernie Taupin, Gus Dudgeon, the producer on "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, plus other band members. The pieces with Dudgeon are particularly insightful as to how the songs were mixed and finished. This double album has to be one of the greatest albums in rock history and as far as double albums go pretty much unparalleled. I mean almost every song on it could've been a single. The fact that "Bennie and the Jets" was number on pop as well as RnB charts is astonishing. But then Elton John does look like he could've been a member of say Parliament or something. (Also see Biz Markie's cover of "Bennie".)
  • Herbie Hancock "Possibilities"

This is a clip from Youtube of the documentary on the making of Herbie Hancock's Possibilities. I wish more musicians, especially from different genres, would make the effort to work together on new projects. That's was this jazz great did and the music that was made is phenomenal. The DVD is worth the price of admission. The musical collaborations not only have some novel charm, but also resulted in some great songs or new arrangements. While I'm a big fan of Billie Holiday, I've never much liked her version (or any other) of "Don't Explain", but Lisa Hannigan and Damien Rice give this bitter song a sweetness and pathos that make it difficult to resist.
