Super Stepside

Poor Best

Joe had plenty of help. Outfitting the exterior of the Super Stepside was easy enough, but to create a stunning A/V wonderland took the skills of Mike Ohren of Jacksonville, FL. The pro tinkered with Joe’s sketches to hammer out a top-notch design. Then, he got to work.

As always, the first step was stripping out the interior and completely sound deadening the vehicle (using Tsunami materials). He then set to center console which holds the Blaupunkt Chicago head unit, Blaupunkt Travel Pilot nav system, a 2-Farad Metra capacitor as well as the controls for the lighting, air horn and HVAC.  Mike crafted the console with MDF, 1x2s and plenty of fiberglass and resin.

Mike also ran speakers everywhere. The 10-inch subs boom from the doors and behind the seats. Meanwhile component speakers make their homes also in the doors, the pillars and dash enclosures. To power those speakers, he tucked two Blaupunkt amplifiers underneath the seats.

Street Glow lighting sets everything off in blue and orange. Other glowing sources of light include the 7.5-inch monitors from Blaupunkt in the sun visors. They either play DVDs from the head unit or pull source from the Accele rear view camera.

A/V isn’t everything. Looks count a bit, too! That’s why Joe had Ray “Solo” Fuentes add additional body mods (the total body mod package includes: shaved door handles, LED running lights on the mirrors, Mr. Grille lighted door insert, Angel Eyes driving lights, BMW M5 side vents, Maxima side marker lights, late-model Malibu head lights and chrome touches as needed). Fuentes then gave it plenty of paint in Dupont Hot Hues Copper Pearl with black (following Joe’s design).

In the bed of the truck, Joe stores the 20-inch spare tire (which fits the KMC “SS” rims). Here, he also stores a ZEX nitrous system and additional A/V equipment such as an additional capacitor and the Optima batteries. Joe sets it off with more lighting at night until he puts the Stepside to Bed by locking the Pace Edwards Bedlocker tonneau cover.

After years of feeling blasé about custom rides, Joe finally can enjoy his dream truck… and the satisfaction of knowing no one can identify what it is!
